Mine seems to be more accurate than that. I get 50 mile warning when the tank is well below 1/8 of a tank. It pretty much corresponds to what it says at full tank as far as miles to E goes.
Full 625 miles to E, well less than 1/8th @ 50 miles to E.
It was just above the red when I last put some fuel in and said 26 miles to E. I put in 26 gal because the pump only gave me $75 and it now says 524 miles to E and the gauge is sitting at 7/8ths.
If you reset the average mpg when you fill up the two should calculate to have the same results. The manual states to fill the tank with the ignition off for a more accurate distance to E reading. I have not been able to see a difference either way.
If it shows 50 miles to E and you drive 10 miles and it says 30 miles to E that should mean your consuming more fuel than the average and it is having to compensate for that change.
When you say it was dry was it out of fuel or in the red on the gauge?
I think red on the gauge is quite a bit from being dry. You don't want the fuel to get too low because the fuel will overheat and may also cause air in the fuel system. This should be factored into the gauge reading. Judging from what I have been able to put in I'd say there is at least 4 or 5 gallons left in the tank at E. I think E is the minimum safe level, not when you will run out of fuel.
They used to say not to let diesel get below 1/4 tank but if you think about it that's not what most people will do. By having the gauge show empty it's more likely that someone would get fuel instead of trying to get another 80 miles on it.
