it doesnt surprise me to be honest. The 6.4 is essentually the same bare block as a 6.0, and weve had front crank seal problems with them too...

as far as your "he doesnt have a clue" comment where you stated that he said a little soot is normal...

He is right. Ford actaully calls "seepage" as normal. Seepage is residue that never forms a droplet that hits the ground, and by the letter of the law a dealer should actually make not attempt to repair seepage....

Also, you can only be so mad that they didnt order the bolts....because when your doing a job for the first time, there are always little things like that which bite you....its happened to me as well before.

Glad to hear you got it back though!!

Marc,
This issue is that it was not putting out "a little soot", it was blowing big clouds of it-everytime you stepped on the throttle. The exhaust pipe is covered in black soot and the rear fender would also get quite black everyday. My brother's '08's exhaust is clean as a whistle. A new DPF has seemed to clear all this up.

However . . . the engine still has issues-very poor mpg's; the dealer even agrees. Pulled our Mastercraft ski boat to Lake Powell and back on Saturday-65 mph on cruise, 9 mpg going, 7 mpg coming back and it would not hold cruise. My old 2000 7.3 would have done it without even breathing hard and would have gotten over 13 mpg's doing it.

So what you are saying is that I shouldn't complain that it gets horrible mpg's and has no power?

It sounds like to me you need to find another service center. Those guys don't have their act together.

whoa....back up just a little here....

I was trying to help you with the fuel economy. These trucks are averaging about 13-14 unloaded...so 9 doesnt surprise me at all towing, and i had a few other questions i planned to ask as well as this thread went along but ill just leave it at this..... As far as the power goes....maybe you need to look at finding a new dealer to look at it. Something had to plug your DPF if it was already replaced. Did the dealer just replace the DPF or did they find the root cause?? before you jump the gun and jump on someone who might have some insight into helping you, you might want to take a breath!!

and your running a 6" lift on 35's with stock gears...that might have a ton to do with it too...

did you have the speedo calibrated to make sure its right with the bigger tires, that could be worth 3 or 4 MPG right there....you could be getting better than you are calculating...

Marc,

I didn't mean to jump on you, just trying to get correct information in the thread. Yes, I did have the speedo recalibrated-in fact my same dealer did that and charged me $200 for the priviledge.

They just told me that the DPF was bad and the hot line told them to replace it-I am unaware of them actually finding a problem causing it to fail.

My old truck also was lifted, 35" tires, stock gears. This new truck was purchased in Phoenix and the mpg's driving it home was 11.7 all totally stock. It actually does better than that now if just cruising down the highway empty.

I own Kenworth 18 wheelers that get over 7 mpg with their 430 hp Cat engines pulling 80,000 loads.

The truck currently has around 4600 miles.

I picked it up from the DPF repair on Thursday, last (3700 miles). I have driven it to Lake Powell and home; Show Low, AZ and home; Phoenix and home. 5 tanks of fuel less than a week-ouch!

Fuel at four different fuel outlets.

And . . . I did notice the announcement about the Surprise event. Thank you.
