Tearin in to the motor

Well, the time has came. Ive delt with the engine knocking/ticking for a few months now and Im tired of wondering whats wrong with it and if its major or not. So my trusted mechanic is gonna pull the cab and start lookin for the problem. He thinks its the piston skirt or wrist pin. The motor doesnt tick/knock until its warmed up to 180 degrees and there is no power loss. Doesnt blow smoke or nothing. the mechanic hooked up his computer to it and shut down each cylinder seperate and ruled out injectors. Then my trusted mechanic pulled the oil filter and discovered aluminum shavings in it. So thats when I decided to have him tear in to it....do you guys have any input on this? Am I doing the right thing? He said Ill have around 1000-1500 bucks for parts and labor after everything is said, done and fixed......thanks in advance for the input!!

The 1000-1500 bucks sounds low, but he may by doing you a favor. Post some pics of the filter, sounds like you have no other option. Good luck, PICS.

That's real cheap. If he sticks to that price, he's doing a big favor. I think I go through $500 just in gaskets and fluids on a tear down.

Yeah, He will stick to it. He said no more then 1500. but am I doing the right thing? or should I just find another used 6.4 and sell mine? he plans on doin it in a few weeks. and if I do go ahead with the tear down, is there anything else I should modify while the motor is torn apart? like head studs? cam? forged pistons?

Minimum of studs. Anything else you want to upgrade, this is the time to do it. Let us know if we can help with any parts.

whats studs run? and I dont know what else to do if anything. has anyone tore down a 6.4 and put upgraded parts in it? I want the truck to be reliable. I plan on putting the spartan 310 in it as well. But I dont have a clue about what kind of internal parts to go with, if any....Thanks!
