You didn't put the red stuff in did you? That stuff has lots of sulfur in it, but most diesels love sulfur.

Most all farm diesel now is ULSD. There may still be some around that is just plain LSD. You won't find the old fashioned high sulfur diesel.

Yup, that's been my experience out here on the West coast. The red is just a dye pack they put in to show road taxes haven't been paid.

Spoke to the tech yesterday and he thinks cat too. I think I will bring it in next week. Have them take a look. Only 8000 miles on the truck so definitely warranty stuff. One thing I did notice today though is that the smell seems to come when the truck is cold. Very foul. But once it is at operating temperature the smell is not there. Not sure if that is significant or not but something I noticed.

Since the smell started, are you going into regen any more often? (Not saying regen is the cause of the smell.)

I get the same smell while idling after start up. Normal if you ask me. My neighbors is the same way. We both have remote starts and in the morning it's pretty raunchy outside when we leave from the rotten smell.

Regen is pretty much the same. In fact it went through a complete cycle today. I have had a couple of times recently when the regen was cut short half way through because I got home before it finished. Thought that might have something to do with the smell but I'm not thinking so anymore.

The reason I asked about regen is because, if your DOC (cat) were not functioning poperly, it may not burn the fuel introduced during regen. If that were the case, you'd notice very frequent regens as the computer would not detect the proper cleaning of the dpf, and continue to signal the process.

Anyway, it sounds like it's working properly in that way. Was just curious.

If this was a pre DPF truck I would say for sure its the cat but since these trucks dont have the same old cat that the older ones have I dont know. I havnt seen a DOC go bad yet so I would like to see the outcome of this. I have replaced several DOCs and DPFs but it was always something with the engine that caused them to fail like a split tip on an injector or a leaking egr cooler.
