2006 6.0l white smoke?

my brother owns a 2006 6.0l powerstroke, and he was driving down the road and heard a loud pop noise then white smoke out the tail pipe and he said his turbo wouldnt spool up. any ideas on what this is?

yes, it sounds like an intercooler boot popped off. Tell him to check all of them. however, if you post this in the 6.0 section you'll likely get more help
