Who is this little guy?

This is for all of you '08 and up guys. Educate me on what this setup is. I have to assume it is to prevent lateral movement since I've only seen them on tailgates with steps. Anyone?

C'mon guys.....
I know this isn't as exciting as a "what tire should I buy" or a "do I really need to delete my EGR" thread but with the expansive knowledge on this forum, surely someone knows the answer to my nonessential question.

Do you have one? I can't believe that with all of the 08 up tailgate threads that this has never been mentioned.

mine 2010 has it. One thing it does block is those led tailgate lights that go across the whole gate at the bottom that always have leds burned out lol that helped my decision in going with the 3 marker lights like the duallys have because of that bracket. its only in that bracket in the up position so im guessing its there for when the tailgate closes and lines it up for the latches.

Does it help prevent theft or will the gate simply lift up out of it?
