Bed difference between 2004-2007 and 2008?

Watching the market for a used camper shell/topper and noticed some saying, "Bought 2008 F-250 and to my surprise my 2007 top didn't fit."

Noticed Leer doesn't seem to post the fine details as to what fits what, but some dealers post more and the 2007 stuff doesn't fit 2008. But for 2008 Leer differentiates between those with the step tailgate and those without.

I have a 6-3/4' bed with the fold out step in the tailgate. Will I have to wait for a good used 2008 model topper or will a previous year fit?

It's my understanding that it's the hatch on the 07 and earlier shells that won't
fit trucks with the tailgate step due to the "lip" that extends out horizontally off
the tailgate step. So, some guys have put 07 and earlier shells on and cut out
or otherwise modified the the hatch door to accommodate for the tailgate lip.

Maybe you could buy a used shell, and then just replace the hatch
with an 08 one that works with the tailgate step?

Thanks! Was thinking it might be something like that because soft tonneau covers generally fit something like 1999 - 2008.
