Any clay bar has the potential to ruin a clear coat if you don't use it properly. To be honest, people who ruin their clear coat using a clay bar deserve to have their clear coat ruined by a clay bar because they're not using it properly. The two steps that need to be taken to prevent this are, A) Use plenty of spray whether it be spray wax or simple water, and B) Use a lateral, back and forth motion throughout the entire vehicle. I have seen people in my complex here clay barring using a circular motion as if they were applying wax to their suped up Nissan Sentra V-Spec. Had the guy not been such a dick in the past I probably would've helped him out but I'm sure my advice would not have been well received.

what is the difference between circles and back and forth. I have always done circles with lots of quick detailer. Looks like im an idiot.

Just curious.

When I clayed mine a few weeks ago I did back and forth. It took about 2 hours to do it. I used detailer to do mine. What kind of polish do you guys use? I used ice synthetic polish. It worked good.

I've got to get mine clayed this month. Just not looking forward to it at all. There's some overspray on the driverside door and both fenders, being a black truck I think it'll definitely help.

The trucks in this thread make me jealous!!

I claybared my 550 a couple months ago... I dont think it has ever been done before and it took me about 1-2 hours. The truck probably feels like its being pampered now since i own it..

i use that new meguires wax that comes in a black box. You can polish your plastic and black rubber / black plastic and it will not leave the white residue. The wax honestly comes off so easy that i end up rubbing longer than needed to get it off. Best wax i have ever tried.

Clay barring the vehicle takes microscopic particles out of the finish and it generally gets absorbed into the clay as you work the bar back and forth. By going in a circle, you increase the liklihood of scratching the clear coat and leaving noticeable swirls as a result. That plus the directions tell you to go back and forth.

If you've never been on the website OCDetails.com, I suggest you check it out. Lots of great instructional 'how to's' on there like washing and clay barring and such. He can make nearly any car look brand new. Here's a link on washing/claying to get you started:
