Removing side louver vents??

I know plenty of guys have done it, but I'm wondering what the best way is to pop the left and right side vents out so I can paint them?? Don't want to break the clips off or scratch the paint ya know!

Advice??

I snaked my arm in from the engine bay and pushed them out. But a plastic putty knife from the outside works too

thin tip flathead and put tape on it, pry the edges and pops right off. the f-350 plate comes off first, they are separate.

I have broken two tabs before, it is difficult not to snap them, but a flathead with a shop rag or using outward pressure (a bit scary). Worst comes to worst 3M makes a plastic cement that works perfectly for broken tabs.

Well, I finally got around to taking the vents off and getting them painted. Wasn't too bad...used a screwdriver and a shop rag and pried from the outside and pushed on the tabs from the back. Used some paint I had left over from my gauge pod and it turned out really good. Put some lights in behind them while I was in there too. Looks pretty nice.

Did you do any prep work to it before painting or did you just use a plastic adhesive primer?

What color should I do mine?

Actually no. I may regret it, but I just cleaned them up good after I took them out of the bezels and sprayed about 3 nice even coats front and back with a gunmetal gray metal flake I used on my MiniMaxx dash pod. It is just enough contrast to really stand out. Looks so much better than the ugly red (or whatever color they call it) that they were. I guess if it starts to peel I will do them again and prep the plastic better. Time will tell. Took me about 4 hours total and that was including mounting the lights and wiring them up.
