Harley running boards-need some electrical help

So i bought a set of the Harley Davidson running boards with lights for my truck 2008 crew cab lariat. The running boards had a factory connector on them, and after a little research i found that i needed to just hard wire them in. So i found the dome/cargo light wire under the rear sill drivers side, it was a violet wire. Problem is when i wire them up and tested them one at a time they worked great, came on when door opened and faded after door was closed. Once i hooked up both running boards it would work once and than not again. also the cargo light would not come on with the door open. So I pulled it apart again tested one at a time and it worked great. But once i hooked both up it would not work. I ended up hooking up both running boards and no cargo light which lets both running board work great, but i do want to have the cargo light working. What am i doing wrong? Are the running boards and cargo light just drawing to much power to work?

Running Boards

Sounds to me like too much draw on that particular circuit. I would wire in a relay and use that purple wire as the trip. The only draw back is the running board lights will be only on or off, there will be no slow dim to off.

When I get a minute i can look in my factory service manual and see if there is a specific set of wires intended for each running board as Ford will rarely not run a wire in the main harness for an accessory. Usually the wires are there you just need to do a little digging to find them .
