New Head Unit

i am looking for local deals on a used nav head unit for my 6.4. i have no skill with this kind of stuff but thoughti could save a buck by finding a used unit.

so heres my question. Lets say i find a used pioneer AVIC. Is there anything else i need to purchase to be able to have it installed? Harness? etc?

I don't believe you will need any additional harnesses unless you want to add additional features like BlueTooth integration, iPod integration, etc.. Here's the installation manual if you want to take a look.

Yep, and if you can find a Z1 or a Z2, you can easily upgrade it (software wise) to a Z3 very easily. I've done that with my Z2.

you mean no additional harnesses than the ones that are provided with the unit new right? its it good odds to find a used unit that still has all of the harnesses? everyone removes these when removing the unit?

You will need an adapter harness to hook the included Pioneer brand harness to your factory stereo plugs with cutting up your factory wiring... Those cost about $10 and are super easy to install.

If you are buying used, I would contact seller and make sure all wiring is included so you will know what you will need or not need when you receive it.

Its been a long time since I looked at the back of mine, or talked to the installer, but Eric may be right about the adapter harness. Don't recall it though at the moment.

Were you able to find a wire to auto dim your head unit to match your dash lights?

If yes, where is it and what color?

Well, I do have mine wired to match my head unit. But I'm not sure which wire it is. I had it installed by an installer and they found the wire(s) to connect so it would auto dim with the dash lights.

Spend a few dollars and buy a wiring harness. The wires are labeled for each function (yes, including the dimmer) and then it will just plug into the factory plug. I installed a Pioneer AVH-P4100DVD and several accessories... really simple. Even if you buy used you can get the Pioneer installation guides and manuals from the Pioneer website.
