I broke my pinion gear , no noise at all.happen to anyone?

I just wanted to ask if anyone has heard of this, my trans took a crap on me after 200k got a good life out of it, I also had the rear diff seal leaking, so I had it all fixed in one go. My mechanic called and told me i had a leak in my rear diff cover, ordered a new one and when he was installing he saw the reason of the leak, the pinion broke 2 teeth off and one of the pieces pushed on the cover and popped a pin hole. both pieces were 2" longs 3/4' wide. big IMO. funny thing is that i have had a little leak but no noise at all, no evidence of a problem, I go ahold of all new stuff and getting installed right now. never heard of anyone breaking and not knowing, could it of happened when the mechanic took it for a test drive? I'm hella hard on my truck, can't see how he can do any more damage than me.
