Front caliper problem

On the way home today I started to notice a funny smell, but thought it might be another car around me. I continued to drive home and when I pulled into the drive way my son noticed smoke coming from under the front left side of the truck. I jumped out and noticed it was from around the caliper / rotor area. I made a quick call to the local ford shop with my concern. The guy stated that yes the do see this some times and that the caliper and pads would need to be replaced.

Question is has anyone else had this issue and if they took care of it themselves?

Thanks,
Kyle
