4x4 not working, left me stranded

While at my deer lease I turned the knob to put it into 4hi, a ticking sound from the drivers footwell started and continued for at least a minut and never shifted into 4wd leaving me stuck in a mud hole. What gives? I tried shifting through the gears, started in neutral then reverse then drive and repeated this a couple of times and it never engaged.

Dumb question, but did you read your owners manual? I thought it was park with your foot on the brake.

Uuhhh no I didn't read the owners manual . Yeah kinda figured it was like my chevy and u could turn the knob into 4hi and 4lo when needed. Hell it worked before and even worked going into 4lo, hmmm might have to do this reading thingy now. But none the less the truck is stuck

4x4 high has to be rolling to shift in to gear. I am not sure about 4 low since you have to stop to shift in to it I dont know if you get out and lock the hubs if that would help for 4 high

If you try it with the hubs manually locked and it works.... then the clicking noise is the vacuum pump which may be screwed up. It is located on the drivers side below/near the brake master cylinder.

Exactly. If you're going to be going somewhere that you may get stuck, lock the hubs the whole time you're out there, and then unlock them when you leave. Engage 4wd when needed.
