4x4 has been making some nasty noises for a while. I thought it was the hubs but when I was changing fuel filters I grabbed the front drive shaft and it had a lot of play in it. I remove the shaft and decide to replace the u joints but I notice inside the housing holding the 2 u joints there is a piece of plastic that is broken. Also the ball joint thing in there has slack and is obviously what is making the noise. I have been to two different dealers and they say I have to replace the entire front drive shaft for $470. Are there any other alternatives or will I just not have 4x4 for a while. 2008 f250. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks
There is a ball and socket that you can get from somewhere that sells/makes driveshafts around you. If it wallowed the hole out though then you will have to get a new driveshaft as it will wear out again in a few weeks. The kit is usually like $20-30 just a ball and pin.
For the price it is worth getting one to see. Usually they can weld a new end on your current one and balance it for alot less than a new one would cost. Here in Tulsa we have Driveshafts INC. I don't know about around you though.
Don's auto mall in Kirkwood NY had one for mine, 150.00 ,complete.
