Oil problems continue with a winded story and few questions
So here is the deal. For the past few months I have been seeing an oil leak on my trans bell housing. I had posted this earlier. Every 2-3 days I would crawl under my truck and just wipe it clean. No big deal. Last week Tue/Wed, I posted that the truck had been dropped of at the dealer and they notified me that a die test discovered a leak at the right side glow plug wiring harness. The tech R&R the harness and noted, everything is OK.
While I was there, I had also requested and had been charged for the oil, oil filter and fuel filters to be changed too. Kill more birds with a single stone eh? While I was picking up the truck I asked the server writer if I should come back for another oil change sooner than my next scheduled date since die is in the engine. He replied "nope". So here is the down fall. Yestarday, I went and look under my truck to find the same leak again. With the idea that the die may still be in the system, I find my black light and crawl under, in, around my engine bay to see if I can identify the source of the leak. Turns out, I found nothing. Even when I crawled where the drip is currently being seen, nothing stand out. Would there still be a trace of die left in the engine even if they changed the oil after applying it? That takes me here. I pulled the dipstick which is actually pretty hard to read unless you (me) has good lighting. The oil wetness looks to extend way past the MAX mark. Possibly 1/4 inch past. I took a blue paper towl and pressed the dipstick indicator in to it and can see the full layout of the indicator and then some. I pull the drain plug and remove approx 5-6 quarts. The dipstick did not register anything at this point. I added 1 and then 2 quarts back in. Below the min was registering now. I added a third and I am just below the max now. I have approx 2-3 quarts in my catch can at this time. This is the same dealer that changed my oil in December when the leak began to appear. Maybe it was overfull then too. How can a dealer overfill the crankcase? And by 2-3 quarts? It was overfilled, yes? What is going on here? Thanks for your time. |

Updated.
3 qts were in the catch can. I justed added it back in to the motor. I am not comfortable with it being as full as it is but after 3 hours of reading, I've come up to the conclusion there is no good understanding on how much oil needs to be in this motor. The manual says 15 qts but a plethora of truckers and shops state 14 qts. Some even recommend 13.5 while everyone agrees it should be between the MIN and MAX levels. but then again, I've even read posts that say the dipstick was updated because of leveling discepencies as late as 07. I like these guys. http://http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/
