I'm in the midst of teardown for STC upgrade, oil/egr cooler replace, dummy plug/ standpipes, banjo bolt, bluespring, turbo drain, and add coolant filter.
Truck was having random stall/no hot start, so I suspect STC, also had up to 25F temp difference while driving city/highway (no severe duty/ towing)
I started with restore and restore plus flushes, and had alittle oil in the original coolant drain.( so I think I caught something early)
No other problems, except an intermittant fuel level sender.
Anyway- I read the thread on rebuilding the turbo: would it be worth my time to do this, since the turbo is (almost) out anyway? '06 F350 w/ 88K miles.
Anything else I should consider while I'm in there? I was considering a heads-on 1 for 1 stick swap, but it seems like most head lifts are the result of a hot tune or hydro-lock from a failed egr cooler. (correct me if im wrong)
Im also considering a CCV mod, lots of oil residue on cac boots, etc.
Should I automatically replace the cac boots?
Should I remove and flush the intercooler?
Anyone know how big a PITA it is to drop the tank for sender r/r?
I don't know if I'd necessarily rebuild the turbo, but cleaning it would be great preventative maintenance (P/N for the reconditioning kit is 4C4Z-9V424-AA). The oil in your coolant could be the beginning of your oil cooler rupturing so it's great that you caught that before it got really bad (although it's still not a good thing, lol).
Failed EGR coolers are definitely a major culprit as far as the head gaskets go. They'll rupture (as a result of the bad oil cooler) due to poor coolant flow since the EGR cooler receives coolant from the oil cooler, the exhaust gasses will heat up the coolant in the EGR cooler causing it to flash boil and build pressure in the system. Your EGR cooler will rupture and you will have coolant leak into your exhaust manifold, down through the exhaust valves, and since liquid doesn't compress, your head gaskets will go and those awful TTY head bolts will stretch.
As far as everything else, I'll let someone more experienced help you there (and most likely correct me on something) as I'm still getting educated by this wonderful community myself
Ditto. Everything Im doing I learned from here over the past several months. Started by googling "random stalls" Had I known anout the problems in the 6.0 7 years ago, I might have reconsidered. But as I'been saving for parts, I've been REALLY looking forward to this job. It'll take me afew weeks, but im under no pressure.
Thanks for the input

25 degree difference in temps but what are actual temps? New thermostat.
Good cleaning of intake manifold and EGR valve if not doing a delete.
IPR screen (comes in the STC kit).
If you have the $$ now would be the time to do the studs and gaskets since you are almost there anyhow IMHO.
Same with the CAC boots, if you have the $ probably a good time. Switch to metal CAC pipe.
