Just now flushing my 6.0 PSD for the first time at 64K miles and 9-1/2 years of ownership Shame on me! I just discovered this forum after having a small boil over this weekend on a not-so-hot day pulling my boat which is only about 6500 lbs. but the bed of the truck was also full of vacation gear. I had ignored my coolant other than checking the level. I hope I have learned about the Gold coolant in time.
I did the Restore phase of the flush and was very pleased with how little debris came out. When I got to the Restore Plus, I started getting what looks like pieces of peeled off black paint (see pic above). Not a huge amount, but enough to give me concern. They are very thin and tear easily when rubbed between fingers (same consistency as latex paint that dries before you clean up painting equipment). I rinsed with tap water 5 times and then 4 batches of distilled water. It was clear after that. I have a coolant bypass kit on the way whenever it comes odd backorder. Has anyone seen these before? Are they something to be concerned about?
I went ahead and put in 3-1/2 gallons of Caterpillar EC-1 coolant. I will see if any of the coolant disappears soon.
Thanks, Hank
That is a good a possibility as any. Could be o-ring shaveings from the thermostat, oil cooler or front cover as well.
