Shifter on column won't move

04' 6.0
The shifter on the column won't shift out of Park unless I push the brake pedal harder than normal, all the way to the floor and sometimes works like normal. What are the components to this feature?

i had the exact same problem with my 04 king ranch. the brake pedal wasnt pushing against the brake switch hard enough to dis -engage the colum shift lock. so i removed the bushing where the switch hooks to the pedal to increase the travell. that was6 months ago and havnt had a problem since.i dont think its a proper fix but it worked

Proper repair would be to replace the switch or brake pedal assembly.

I guess I'll try to push on the button manually to see if I can hear the column clicking and try ghues' idea.
