FORD OEM Diagnositc Equipment

Any Certified FORD Mechanics out there?

I was wanting to know what does FORD use to conduct diagnostic tests on a 6.0 powerstroke?

I just bought AE with the Ford bundle and am not liking it to much. I have noticed the IDS VCM I & II's out there but I find it hard to believe FORD uses those.

Is that what Ford makes you use at work?

Guess ya noticed the graphics that look like they were made by a fifth grader.
But that is the official Ford factory scanner that every dealer is supposed to use.

Looks like a kid made it but works real well.

I also subscribe to a site called “ALLDATAdiy” which has detailed troubleshooting steps. Will the IDS VCM2 allow me to follow the troubleshooting steps and conduct all tests as outlined in alldatediy?

That is only the interface. You need a licensed copy of the software and a key or you are dead in the water. Unless you have deep pockets or you use it every day to work on vehicles, it might be out of your price range. You can't beat AE for the price, but it does have its limitations.

Do you know if I would be required to purchase an annual Key for the software?

Yes, I believe it is $600 every year. There may be older versions that are one-time or have been cracked. I looked into it a few years ago and quickly determined I didn't need it that bad. All in it was over $2k for year one.

With all the advances lately, there may be a better program than AE that more closely mimics the IDS. Keep in mind that the interface is just a data transfer device. Most would be very similar for 2-way communications.

Great info.

Do you know if after the first year the software would lock you out requiring me to purchase a new key or would it continue to work on the older software?
