Alternator?

Last night on the way home from dinner I noticed first the lights where getting dimmer then the ABS light came on. Shortly after that the radio and gauges, and lights died. I limped down the road till I came up on a gas station to pull into. Once we sat there for about five min or so all the lights came back on then off again. About 5 more min into this the truck died. I called a friend to bring his truck and jump us off cause we were only about 5 miles from the house and I didnít want to leave the truck out. Well, after letting the battery charge for about 15 min it started. We got most of the way home when the engine started chugging and finally died. I got mad pitched my usual uncalled for fit and went home. This morning I removed both batteries (cause they where dead) took the home charged them came back to the truck started it right up and drove it home. I have been checking on it throughout the day and the batteries are still charged and itís still cranking and running all the gauges are working except the fuel gauge for some reason. So, with that said do you guys think it's the alternator going out and if so, should I go ahead and install a bigger one like a mean green or does that even really make a difference?

Thanks

Sounds like you need a voltmeter to make the determination. If you're truck is down, may as well bench test the alt and batteries.

its probably the alt, the batterys dying wont kill the truck, but its weird, because my truck lost the alt last week and even with the alt not working at all, i still had engine, never stalled and I drove it 50 miles to get it home

all works but the fuel gauge? do you have fuel in it?

alright seriously, i would have to say you are on the right track..seems like it isnt charging itself. how about bringing it somewhere and seeing if they will do a alt. test on it. before you spend some money on the wrong thing

Yeah I filled up last nigth before we went out to eat and now after all that happened its only showing a 1/4 tank. Yeah, I guess I can pull it off and take the alt to auto zone and have it teasted. I just wanted some imput before I went threw dealing with removing the alt. As far as the engine chuging and dying. I asumed it was losing power to the fuel pump and starving the engine of fuel after the batteries were dead.

I'm going through the same thing and am wondering if its my alternator too. I had issues with a door switch and that worked. Its been dying at random. I went on a 300 mile trip, then the next morning it was dead. I drove all day yesterday, it started this morning and i noticed that the ABS light was turning on and off at random. I turned it off when i dropped off my niece and i needed a jump. It had gotten so bad, i picked up a solar powered trickle charger because i thought it was because it just sat. Its going to be looked at today, i'll let you know what happens, hopefully it'll help you too. Oh, lights were EXTREMELY dim and flickering.
