fuel gauge

i have scrolled through about other peoples fuel gauge issues and have not seen one thats doing the same as mine. i just bought a 06 f250. the fuel gauge works fine when fill up. when gets down to just below a half tank it will drop to the bottom and set the light off. when cycle power sometimes it stays at 0 or sometimes it will show full. real speratic. have been tracking mailage and it seems to bouch around to. one time get 330 to tank and today it almost ran out and had 260. seems to me like a sending unit but have seen alot about people changing them and not fixing the problem. new here thought i could get some help. thanks
