When the waterpump on my 05 went out at 2300 miles I looked around on the internet and got scared to death that my 50 K investment was doomed! I never researched the latest powerstroke knowing how well our company 7.3 held up towing our 20,000 lb boats (w trailer) all over the country with no issues. I relied on blind trust and I just wanted a Ford! Other than the water pump and minor oil leaks, my 6.0 has been flawless! I haven't wasted too much time worrying about reliability. I do think that proper warm up and letting the turbo cool is essential with the 6.0. My brother in law is waiting for the "perfect" diesel rig to come out and asks me " hows it running" every time he sees me! I know he hopes to hear about the latest 6.0 "issue". I explain you can not treat these like the wifes Tahoe! Ever notice how the neighbor is halfway down the block 2 seconds after the engine starts in the morning? Its running on metal, not oil! Proper care goes a long way!

It's a general rule for ALL vehicles that when you first start it, you wait about 30 seconds to let at least some oil get to the top of the motor and start lubing everything up. I wait about 45seconds to a full minute if the truck has been sitting for a few hours or more. (When it's cold....where talking about 3-10 mins.) My 7.3L just does not like it when it's cold and takes FOREVER to warm up.
Take care of your truck, and beat on it a little every once in a while, and it will serve you well. |
