Unhappy 6.0 BLOWBY HELP????

I HAVE A 2005 F250 THAT WENT TO THE DEALER TODAY FOR A CHECKUP. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE ENGINE MEASURED 3 BARS OF BLOWBY (WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?) THE ENGINE CURRENTLY HAS 124K AND FEELS AS STRONG AS EVER. DO YOU THINK THE ENGINE BLOWBY IS SOMETHING TO WORRY ABOUT?

It means it blowsby 3 bars and stops at the 4th one.


No honestly I have no clue and I have never heard of blow by being rated in bars.

One bar = atmospheric pressure, so that would mean that your blowby is 3x the atmospheric pressure. 1 bar = 14.5038 psi, therefore 3 bars would equal approx. 43.5114 psi. That of course would be absolute pressure, which is normally not used in these applications. The way its normally measured is pressure above atmospheric pressure, therefore it would be 3 bars above atmospheric pressure, 4 bars = 58.0152 psi. There is no way in hell you have enough blowby to have that much pressure in the crank case.

Blowby tells me that compression is loss either by piston rings or valves.
Maybe even head gaskets.

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES. THEY REPLACED THE HEAD GASKETS @ 54K MILES. WILL THERE BE A NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE IN POWER LOOS WITH THIS MUCH BLOWBY BECAUSE I NOTICE NONE. HOW WORRIED SHOULD I BE AT THIS POINT?

Most folks don't know they have blown head gaskets due to power loss; they notice the coolant puking and the high engine temps... You can continue to drive with blown HG's, although you should take it easy. BTW, the heads were prone to warpage (depending on how bad the gaskets and how hot the block was, and they recently updated the spec to .002. Do you know if they mic'd the heads and what they were at the time the HG's were replaced? It sounds like one or both of your heads are warped or your HG's are bad (again). That would be a pricey fix without a drivetrain warranty. Let us know what they say...

I don't think so! Did they replace with studs or bolts? Ford changed the torque specs on bolts but I still do not trust the bolts much. JMO Do you have a chip or programmer??

I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS TRUCK WITH THE AGREEMENT THAT THE TRUCK QUALIFIES FOR THE FORD EXTENDED WARRANTY PROGRAM. I CONTACTED THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE TRUCK AND HE STATED THAT FORD REPLACED THE HEAD GASKETS IN THE 50K RANGE. HE ALSO GAVE ME A SCT PROGRAMMER WITH CUSTOME TUNES. K&N INTAKE AND MAGANOFLOW 4" EXHAUST. I HAVE NOTICED THAT COOLANT BLOWS OUT OF THE COOLANT CAP ONLY WHEN IT IS UNDER LOAD. THE TRUCK NEVER RUNS HOT THOUGH. HELP, HELP, HELP....

I WENT TO THE ORIGINAL SELLING DEALER AND THE SERVICE MANAGER THERE PRINTED OUT A COMPLTE SERVICE HISTORY ON THE TRUCK. IT APPEARS THAT THE HEADS WERE REPLACED @ 52K MILES. WHAT KIND OF EXPENSE WILL NEW HEADS INSTALLED BE?

The tech will have to pull your engine to install new heads. It varies, but you are looking at upwards of $2k, plus the cost of the heads, if that's what it is. Your best bet is to also have ARP head studs installed at the same time. You can drive it with blown HG's, but you should have this concern verified by a Ford diesel tech soon and have them explain it to you so that you can make an educated decision. Good luck!
