Delta is 31 - warranty request advice

I just bought an 03 Excursion 6.0L with 88000 miles and it came with a 3mo/3000m warranty. The engine and components appear to be stock. I got my SGII yesterday and cruising at 65 for a few miles I measured a stabilized ECT=181 and EOT=212, so Delta=31. So, warranty item #1 - oil cooler.

To me the coolant temp seems low, so maybe a stuck open thermostat? Warranty item #2 (although this may be saving me right now)

I'm also smelling coolant through the vents, only sometimes and somewhat faint, but it's there. Dealer did a pressure test and said it was fine, and this type of smell is typical, but I'm not convinced. I'm guessing EGR cooler may be leaky and we have warranty item #3.

Your thoughts on the above? Could I have head gasket problems also is this truck was run long or hard with these issues?

I'm thinking if they're in there I should ask them to replace the IPR and HPOP screens as well.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Moose

I don't know about head gaskets, but your oil cooler is done and your thermostat may be stuck open as well. If they replace the EGR cooler, it's going to be an OEM unit. Pretty much a boat anchor if you asked me. Unfortunately, they are probably going to make you present FORD documentation to validate your concerns. Warranty work is money and used car lots don't make money doing warranty repairs.

Good luck getting them to do the repairs, it may be a tough row to hoe.

if this is a car lot this is going to be a battle and may have fine print excluding this repair all together

if it's a Ford dealer then if they do the cooler spring for the other stuff on your dime Like BPD egr cooler etc

Agreed! When I bought my truck it was leaving puddles of oil everywhere and the dealership (Dodge dealership) said that 6.0 leak like that from the factory and its normal! I laughed and said that if it becomes a problem, is it covered under the 3 month and 3000mile warranty and they said yes. Bought truck and took it immediately to the for d dealership and they said it was a rear main seal... Took three weeks of agruing to final get the truck fixed. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you

Update...so far so good....I'll update again later.

I bought this from a Dodge dealer, but they also have a sister Ford dealer down the street. I asked if a Ford diesel mechanic could work on it since they're more familiar. My original request with all the details from my original post was in a email to my sales guy. Within 1 hour, the Service Director emailed me back. They will put a Ford diesel mechanic on my truck this Thursday to look over all of my concerns and make sure everything is addressed properly and they'll provide me a loaner vehicle. The warranty is a Chrysler-backed deal that has a $100 deductible, but if they do all that work for $100, I'd be happy.

So far, these guys have been legit about service. After the initial test drive I raised concerns about a few small issues, including bad alignment and a small oil leak, and they took care of it all for free. They even drove a loaner to me 45 minutes away to bring the truck back in to do the work a few days later. At this point my experience with them has been completely different than any other dealer I've ever encountered, in a good way.

I figure even if they do all OEM parts, it at least buys me time to save up for BPD replacements later, while not worrying about causing other damage. The one thing I do want to do ASAP however is a coolant filter.

Dropped the truck off this morning. The dealer is about 50-60 minutes away. At one point I was able to set cruise at 65 for 20+ miles. Delta was even worse... it hovered around 182ECT/232EOT = 50 degree delta! Holy crap!

I'm supposed to leave Sunday for a camping trip. Towing a 24' travel trailer at about 4500-5000 lbs. Hopefully they can get this straightened out.

Well, they road tested and checked it out. There is definitely something wrong and they'll tear it down tomorrow. Thermostat is bad for sure. They'll check out EGR cooler , oil cooler, and head gaskets and everything else. Whatever it needs will be taken care of under the warranty. Being done by the weekend is unlikely, so they're even going to cover a rental truck to tow my camper for my trip.

Wow, seems like it is all going your way with this. I'm shocked but glad to hear it. Let us know what they find and do.

Yesterday the service desk person said that the mechanic told her that it looks like someone was in the engine before. Hopefully they didn't do something stupid. The mechanic was also the one who made the call that he wouldn't recommend towing with my truck until it gets fixed, which triggered the freebie truck rental. They are calling him their 6.0 specialist, so my hopes are high.
