Frame mounting fuel filter housing reassembly question

Hey guys, putting my fuel filter housing back together.

Underneath the fuel water separator drain cover there is a black plastic piece holding a couple springs inside of it.

It popped out while I was cleaning it. Is there any special way to put it back together? I know there is a little brass plunger that goes inside of it then the springs go on top of it.

I couldnt get the plastic piece to stay in place after putting it back together. The spring kept pushing it back out. I reinstalled the drain cover and had it quickly move it in place to keep the springs from pushing the cover off.

Just pulled the cover off again just now to double check everything and the plastic cover over the springs is now staying in place so I hope that means I got it back together right.

I will post a pic of what I am talking about in the next post.

That black plastic piece at the top is what I'm talking about. It holds down two springs and a brass plunger inside of the housing

I was trying to find out some more about the water sep. myself. But Im just not using the correct words in the search feature or something, or this is like the tranny. not a lot of issues with the systems therefore not a lot of info.
Did you find a lot of trash/gunk/mud or Jimmy Hoffa when you pulled it apart?

Yes I did. Almost like globs of Vaseline and grit inside of it. I believe that is reason that my Water in fuel light came on.

I am kinda glad my drain plug was stripped out forcing me to remove the cover otherwise I never would of found it.

I think draining that separator often will prevent any build up of gunk in it.

One a side note, the new drain valve is VERY nice. I'll post a pic of it with my phone.

Riffraff diesel sells them for like $16.

I got mine through Sunrise Ford out in CA for like $12. Bought new filters from them also.

Update:
Went ahead and put it all back together the way I thought it should go.
Charged the batteries and it fired right up and runs great!
