P0299, turbo noise and deltas

2005 Excursion 6.0L PSD, 102K miles, stock as far as I know.

EOT/coolant delta approaching 15* at 65mph on the highway, throwing P0299 when towing my RV, and there's a noisy spin-down of the turbo when I shut the engine off.

So I'm thinking about pulling the turbo off & cleaning it, along with the EGR valve - but my research (in places like this forum) says I may have to replace the turbo.

Was looking at the Garrett replacement turbo and was wondering if I can really just bolt it on, or do I need to beef up stuff (like head bolts)?

Plus since I really hate to redo stuff, and I'd be pretty well into the top end of that beast anyway ... should I go ahead and do the bullet-proofing (EGR delete, etc.)? Or should I tear it apart and look for the telltale signs of impending disaster and evaluate then?

If your money and time allows for you to bullet proof the motor, then why not? You can upgrade the turbo with stock head bolts. Take a look at MTW stage 1 or hybrid since you tow your tuck will love these turbos. I'd also free up your exhaust for lower EGTs and a little more power. Make sure you update all the little things these motors are know to be trouble makers…

Got that one tagged as a favorite. Also found several others.

Thinking about starting with Sinister coolant filter & EGR upgrade, K&N Cold Air Intake, and CFM LargeMouth intake.

When I get the turbo, etc., apart I'll make a decision about other stuff. I really like the Sinister setup, and would likely go with their closer-to-stock turbo & oil cooler mods.

The only question left is which tuner ...

Any of the SCT's are great options and any of the tune writers that are frequently mentioned here on the org are all great options. e.g. Tony Wildman, Bill at PHP, Vivian @ Quicktricks, Eric @ innovative diesel, Matt @ gearhead...
