A/C question

Yesterday I was driving along, with the a/c on of course. It started blowing hot air and smelled kinda funny. I turned the a/c and the smell went away. I was only a few miles from the house. When I got home I poped the hood and turned the air on wide open. I could smell the same smell over by the heater ore area. Today, for the most part the air seems to be working fine. Any ideas?

Update:

A/C compressor clutch went out. Brought it to my buddies shop for him to look at. After about 30seconds he said the compressor is f'd up. We went inside to order the parts. Came out went to move the truck and it would not turn over. The pulley seized up. How lucky do you have to be to break down at the mechanics shop?
