I am on my third powerstroke. The first was a 1996 that my son now owns and drives everyday(what a great truck). The second was an 04 which I recently traded for an 06, which is basically a carbon copy of the 04, even the color. I wish I had my 04 back. It had more zip and got better mileage (17-19 average). The 06(15-17).

The reason for this thread is a noise I am experiencing. It sounds like a rattle or exhaust ping. It occurs when the engine is cruising at no load or when I let off the accelerator. It goes away under acceleration. It goes away when decelerating down a grade, but resumes at the bottom of the grade. It does not occur when the truck is cold.

I have had this back to the dealer. The service tech who obviously doesn't run diesel engines every day sayed he could only hear the diesel rattle. I farm and own a total of 10 diesels. My wife drives a diesel Jeep, so we know what a diesel should sound like. I plan to take it to another dealer ASAP. Does anyone have a clue or is this normal with the 06 variety. Does it have something to do with the Turbo gate?

Thats a hard one to diagnose from here lol. I bet Marc will chime in with his experience this evening.

How does the wife like the Liberyt? They make power mods for those things, but I cant talk my wife out of her V8 Explorer.

Hey Welcome to the site!

The Liberty is rock solid. Purrs effortlessly at freeway speeds and is very spunky from a stop. Slight pause while the turbo gets boost as with all turbos. We traded an 04 F150 4x4 supercrew with the 5.4 on the Liberty so my wife is holding back on her final verdict. The F150 was a beast in the snow, and she liked that. It rode and handled like a car but the mileage was 15 to 17. The Liberty is delivering 23-25.5.

I don't drive this truck everyday since it is listed as a farm vehicle. It currently has only 3800 miles on it and I've owned it since early March. Around the farm the Ranger takes the wear and tear off the pickup. so sometimes out of sight out of mind comes into play, which is the main reason it hasn't been back to the dealer. I did pull a trailer with it yesterday for about 150 miles.
The noise does not occur untill the truck is up to temperature. It is definately not related to any cooling issues. At idle the truck sounds normal. When the accelerator is barely touched the noise begins. It is most noticable at no load engine cruising. The noise may still there under heavy acceleration, it just can't be heard.

Now for the hard part. It sounds like a tinny ping resonating through a pipe. I sounds like its coming form directly in front of the firewall. Hard to tell which side of the vehicle, but if I had to guess, I would say it's more toward the right side.

Im guessing that if you follow the pipes that leave your exhaust manifold and go up and meet at the turbo (the y pipes) looking over the trans, you will see soot on one of the flexcouplers..........the Y pipe is probably bad......

Welcome to the forum Roy... Just chimed in to welcome you and to say your wife isn't the only one with a Liberty diesel. My wife has an 06' and just loves the thing and even I admit it is a blast to drive... I just kinda like the Superduty more because of the sheer size but that's just me....

Ken....

Good news and Bad news. I've discovered the source of the noise. Please see the thread at
http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/52...-06-psd-2.htlm

It appears, 06- 6.0 liter engines produced during a brief pieriod, all have this problem, which is a noisy HPOP. Ford appears to be taking the, its normal approach, because of the obvious expense to them to correct the problem. I plan to return to the dealer armed with this information. Keep you posted.
