Shift and Cruise Control Problems

So my 05 Excursion (6.0) has started doing a couple of weird things - related I believe. First, it is difficult to shift out of park, but if I step on the brakes kind of hard, I can get it in gear. Second, I have to push hard (too hard) on the brakes to get cruise control to disengage. I have heard that these problems could be caused by the brake light switch, brake position switch, or brake pressure switch. I'm assuming the brake light switch only affects the illumination of brake lights? Under normal/soft brake pressure, brakes light illuminate normally (read: lights are unaffected).

I can tell that something isn't working right though because I have a trailer brake controller. Under soft brake pressure the little light on it does not come on anymore. If I push firmly on the brake pedal, the brake controller detects the input.

Indicative of the brake position sensor? Any way to test them?

Thanks!
