gauge light

So I was racing a Mach 1 today, then let off for a bit remembering what happened last time when I blew my head gasket, that was a nightmare. I then drove to a near by Mcdonalds and my check gauge came on. It was at the H, yikes! When I opened the hood the coolant reservoir was steamy. I let it cool down a bit for like 15-20min and added some coolant, but the light was still on at H. I then drove with the heater on and it went down halfway then suddenly the air keep running cold.
