RIPPED OFF!!!!
For weeks I've been troubleshooting some surging, jerking, and lack of power on my '03. After playing the guessing game, I finally broke down and took it to GARY SMITH FORD here in Ft. Walton Beach, FL. Now, I'm usually not one to drop names, but I can't resist here.
First off, I'll tell you what the "fix" is for my truck. According to the dealership, I need a new EGR (saw that coming), a new MAP Sensor (understandable), and to run some injector cleaner. All of this, for the "reasonable" price of $1,200 + Tax + Labor. Yes, you read it right. The guy also says, "oh, one more thing, you're 'Water in Fuel' light is also on...how long has it been on?" I say "it never has been...and it wasn't even on when I dropped it off at your dealership this morning...so why would it be on now after you've touched it?" He replies, "Oh...*PAUSE* I'll have the tech re-evaluate it. Low and behold, when I pick up the truck...NO water in fuel light. Go figure that one out. So, here I am, $213.70 later...JUST to have the Ford Dealership tell me what's wrong. WHAT A RIP OFF!!! I dunno if we support cutting down a dealership here on the org or not, but this is legit. A WORD TO THE WISE...IF YOU NEED UR TRUCK REPAIRED...DONT TAKE IT TO GARY SMITH FORD IN FT. WALTON BEACH, FLORIDA!!!!!! On a lighter note...I'll let you know if the diagnosis was right, when I change the parts this weekend.

That sucks, Lets see, $350 for egr, I think about $150 for map "dont quote that" and what seems to be a lot of labor and injector cleaner. Sorry man.

try doing the repair without replacing the MAP sensor...... A lot of times if you live close to sea level..the map sensor will test out of range during the EGR test if the barometric pressure is just right...... there is a good chance it isnt bad. If the CEL continues...then try the MAP sensor after you do the rest.
The injector cleaner ISNT NEEDED and is a gimmick..... |

Hmmmm...someone told me down here today that if I buy the parts from an International Navistar place it might be a little cheaper...any truth to that?

yes and no
depends, some stuff is the same and some is different. When it comes to electronics and sensors alot of times they are calibrated different because the two companies run the motors different.

the EGR should be, unless it is considered to be part of the emissions, then it maybe more likely to be covered if the truck is under 4 yrs 70,000 miles or something like that. i dont know exactly but that sounds right to me.
