Tired of EGR problems!
2004 F350 6.0l 4x4
I had the egr cleaned by the dealership. What happened was the truck lost power. It would drop to 500 rpm and when in gear any peddle either light or wot wouldn't do anything. Then 30 seconds or so it would work again. Well I put the Bully dog on it and bumped it up to 40% for fuel. After some stop and go traffic it does the same dang thing again. Its been a few months since I had the EGR cleaned but this is ridiculous. Can this sob be removed, blocked off? Would a new one get me another 65k or would this one suffice if cleaned again? It pours out black smoke and stinks also and of course drops to maybe 10% power output and 500 rpm. However this time when I stomped the peddle it actually reved up slowly and then blew out whatever was "stuck" and was fine for a few minutes then it did it again. I removed the Bullydog put it back to stock config and havent had any problems with it since. It seems that the egr valve cant handle the extra fuel and clogs. Is this a correct assumption or should I be looking at something else and selling the Bullydog? I really want to block that dang egr valve off but not sure if the cpu will work to well or if it will cause major problems. Does my year truck have a egr cooler and is it needed can the whole system be removed or what? Thanks |

Thanks to all who responded so far.
Ok so what are the steps to remove this thing/system? Where is the plug located? I havent spent much time under the hood. |

Check out this link: Page 13: Component Locations
Make sure your truck is OFF when you pull the plug for the valve. It's also advisable to remove and clean the EGR valve with CARB cleaner (NOT brake cleaner) when you do this to make sure it's closed. It will give you an EGR code but shouldn't turn on the CEL on your 04. Get an SCT which can program out the EGR valve. Your engine and tranny will thank you for it and you'll love the benefits of custom programming. |

egr
lets start by saying this. Every egr I have ever cleaned came back within a week if not the same day. I dont clean them anymore. Just replace it. Make sure the inside of the intake isnt wet. You could have an egr cooler/ oil cooler problem. Also make sure that it has the latest calibration in it.
Oh and it wont do you any good to unplug it if it is stuck open. Also if you get a tune to shut off the egr make sure you put the block off in the y pipe. |
