Belt Tensioner question / problem

So I amhaving a squealing noise from the left side of the engine when I turn on the A/C. I had a friend suggest changing the belt. Truck has 120K miles so I decided to go ahead and do that. I did not research the process and got the new belt on but managed to strip out the 1/2" hole on the tensioner in the process. I read on another thread that you can pull on the belt and a clip will engage on the tensioner?? Which way do I pull? Towards the drivers side or left side if facing the engine?? Oh and changing the belt didnt fix the problem, but it is a little quieter so I'm guessing the pulleys on the tensioner are worn as well. Please any help?? I need my A/C, its hot in Louisiana!!
