Weird A/C problem

I've got an '03 Excursion with a dual zone A/C system. The other day the A/C system wouldn't work at all. The controls on the front wouldn't work at all and there were no indicator lights on the panel. It was as though the A/C was off. The system was completely unresponsive to any button pushing. The rear A/C blower (manual knob) worked fine, but it just blew hot air. I shut the vehicle down and restarted it several times, with no change in results. I let it sit for about 2 hours and it did the same thing. I went ahead and drove it and about 30 minutes into the trip the A/C started working on its own. It has run fine since then. I obviously want to prevent a reoccurrence, especially since I live in Texas and it gets over 100F every day. Does anyone have any ideas?
