Blew Head Light Fuse 30 Amp

Well I was coming home from an out of town job at night doing about 75 and all the sudden the lights just go out. Luckily there were other cars around so I could see the road to pull over. Started checking fuses and found a bad one. Replaced it and away we went no more problems. But I did notice that all the realys in the fuse bay were pretty hot to the touch. Anyone ever had this happen. I am afraid if I take it to the dealer they are just gonna say they can't find anything wrong. Any Ideas?

the relays are going to be hot, the way a relay works is it uses a flow of electrical current through a coil winding to produce magnatism. when this magnatism is on, it pulls a switch from the open (no electrical flow) to the closed (complete circet). that coil has a ton of resistance in it, and resistance in a wire builds heat........

now, as far as your headlamps, i would definately take both headlamp bulbs out of the sockets and inspect both sockets for any melting or damage.....something caused that fuse to blow, so it will probably happen agian if you dont figure out why now.........Marc

might want to look for a bare wire too, a damaged wire making contact with metal could cause a fuse to blow.

Will check it out for sure. Also I have an aftermarket alarm not sure if their hook up would make any wireing issues that would cause it.

if they tied it into the headlights (lights flash when alarm goes off) that could be a source of the short

Was at the dealer for 2 days and they could not reproduce the short. Knew this was gonna happen. They said that they traced the whole headlight wiring system, checked the switch and the bulbs and nothing seems to be wrong. Guess I'll have to find it myself.

It could also be an odd ball, that will never happen again and would just drive you trying to isolate it.

Worst case, add an aftermarket Heavy duty headlght harness, and it takes the load off the factory harness, and provide better light output.
