check engine light

hey guys. new guy here. to the forum and to fords! i recently bought an 04 f-350 dually 4x4. i only got to drive it for a few days before i had to go back to work. seems to run and drive good. got a history report on it and its had no wreck, title, etc. history. my wife has been drivin it the last few days and said the check engine light came on and has stayed on. said it still runs good and everything. read that some people had trouble with the gas cap but thats not it. she looked in the manual and couldnt find a "water in fuel" light like ive heard some of the newer ones have. could this be whats causing the light? im trying to diagnose this from 2000 miles away and really hope its nothing major. any help you guys could give me would be much appreciated.

There is a light that says "water in fuel" so that wouldn't be it. Have her take it to a auto zone, schucks, or some place like that so they can pull the codes off the truck for you. They can even give a description of whats wrong and what needs to be replaced. Some times they can't do it and you have to take it to a shop, but most of the time this works for me!

thanks. if she dont get to it, ill do it when i get back home. if i take it to the ford dealer, will/what would they charge to read the codes? could this be a minor problem since it still runs fine? also, whats a good place to get a warranty for it? it has close to 137,000 miles on it and found a place that would do 5yr/100,000 miles for $2600. does that seem like a good price for it?

I've never priced out a warranty since my truck is older... ford charges an arm and a leg to even look at a truck. Take it to a diesel shop if there are any in your area. I think ford charges $200 just to look at it.
