Hey guys more fun to fix! It's expected for truck that sat under a tree for 2 years. When I swapped motors bought and a new a/c compressor and such. Well something has definitely died in the a/c. Like dead animal smell. Around the hood cleaning it I found rat droppings. So new mission cleaning the dead animal out of the a/c vents. Where do I even start guys? What should I check first? A/c works perfect but smell is horrendous ahaha.
Does it still smell as bad when it's on recirculae? If so the main HVAC stuff is behind the passenger side dash, I believe you can access it from the bottom/glove box.
more then likely you are going to have to remove the dash cover and stick a shop vac in each of the heat/ac vents and you may even have to remove a bunch of screws behind the glove box and remove the ac unit it self. There are a lot of spaces a little rodent could of died in that truck.
its not that difficult. There are youtube videos galore on removing the various 1999-2007 dashes. I would youtube for a bit and you'll find a good removal/install video. I just started removing things and it came off in under an hour. I helped a buddy who had a mouse/rat nest above the radio and it STUNK! but just tedious is all
the thread below will have more then you need. he swapped out his 2001 dash for a 2010. just gotta scroll through till you find what you need
On my 03 with the digital AC when it jumps from 65 to 60 it closes the heater core all others it's open. Recirculation is a button I can turn it on or off on any temp setting.
forgive me if I don't know how to work these posts. I find it hard to navigate these forums. but am desperate to find a way to remove the dash to access my defrost ducts... I had some critters make nests in the vents so everytim you turn the air/heat/defrost on a few little pieces blow out. I have gotten some out of the a/c and heat vents. In the defrost vent there are directional veins to direct the air... Here lies the rub... I can get it all out. just a piece at a time. Would take for ever to fish it all out as it blows up to the exit. I want to remove the whole dash so I can remove tubes and blow them out... Any suggestions for removal? I cant find any videos. Just cluster removal. I have taken all the little screws from dash cap and saw that was not going to work so I then took the 10MM bolts out of each side where it mount to pillar. I am sure they need to be out but it would not budge. Is there some thing I am missing. Please enlighten me.
Mice can build a stinking pile of a mess with grass, twine, tattered cloth that they gather for building the nest that gets soaked in their pee over time.. Our car set on a ranch in texas for 3 months and even with mothballs i had a nest that stunk from mousepiss and babies- it completely filled the cabin air filter housing.
The smell gets into the seat foam, leather, carpet, etc so it's hard to completely remove. I pulled the hvac ducts apart and Cleaned it out and wiped everything down with bleach and still a faint odor 2 years later if closed up in the hot sun.
You can buy a small ozone generator to completely eliminate the smell which I contemplated doing at first. The generators are very effective and used by used car dealerships to eliminate smell from cars that were smoked in. I just used some air fresheners and kept the windows down and 95% of the smell was gone in a couple of weeks.
