I have searched all over this forum and others for the answer and I haven't been able to find it. So sorry in advance.
I have a 2005 excursion with 6.0. Dealer said it was bone stock except for FICM was upgraded to 54.5 volt model. Has 133,000 miles. This is my first diesel so I am learning.
I have a WIFI OBD2 dongle that I use with an iPhone app called dash command. I monitor battery voltage , ficm voltage, eot and ect all of which have been good. I have never seen the ficm drop below 54.5 and the battery voltage starts at 12.5 for first 10-20 seconds then it' jumps to 14 and stay at 14.
I have had it for 2 months and twice it starts rough and has white smoke coming out of exhaust. The first time it did this it took 10 seconds for it to clear up and was running fine. This time it didn't go away and continued to run rough and smoke. I didn't have any check engine lights on tho. So I went ahead and ran diagnostics and it said I had one "stored code" p0611. Finally after 15 minutes it got warm and quit running like that and no more smoke. I don't understand why I didn't have a light if I had a code. And I'm not sure if it is bad injectors or bad ficm causing my problems?!
The way to diagnose injectors is have someone with the proper equipment run a power balance on it after an overnight cold soak. Or run it cold and disconnect injectors one at a time until you find the one that stops the smoke and causes no change in running condition? You can get it set up the night prior by removing the clips off each injector connector. With the clips removed, you can disconnect them quicker. And remove anything in the way that won't stop it from running.
I'd probably just get a shop with an IDS to run the power balance tho. It'll be much more reliable.
You get it from a dealer? Any warranty?
There is one diesel shop but idk if they are reputable. I have a shop I usually take my cars to when its something I cant figure out. They work on everything I have seen lots of power strokes sitting out there. There is also a couple ford dealers around that are big diesel dealers.
if it has an aftermarket warranty I bet your going to either be denied or paying out of pocket a few hundred easy for two injectors ( atleast if you want it fixed properly
so making sure your running the right oil and filters is really no cost since it needs to be done anytime you buy a used vehicle and not just the engine oil
Archoil is less than 50.oo that will be a drop in the bucket and 1/2 of what they will hit you on for out of pocket diagnostics
and Archoil has a money back guarantee so it is potentially free also
I paid extra money to get the warranty that would cover injectors. So hopefully it would cover it. Deductible is supposed to be $100. But I don't know for sure how it works haven't had to use it yet.
not arguing here
just giving options and my experiance with A/M warranty vs dealer
when i had two fail i actually had some hot shots in the mail to me
but the second injector made it past the point of no return before it arrived
i went to the dealer and they diagnosed two down
now get this, I offered to pay for the other 6 out of pocket and the tech advised against it, so I passed , that was 100,000 miles ago
so for once a tech saved me money LOL if i had the miles I have now i would have done all of them no question
i also don't think the solvents used in the 3 common oil additives mask stiction and while Archoils suggest you run it all the time Hotshots states once and done
unless you want to PM every so often and I figure if the varnish is gone its not a band aid or mask (I am not one of the OIL additive fan boys just my opinion and here is where I would use it )
so if he does the dealer route I would still make sure that the oil is fresh / synthetic/5-40 and the proper type cap and filter
then pay for diagnostics and see what happens and what his A/M warranty will cover because many times it was cheaper for me to buy a better than OEM part and install myself ( water pump/Alternator) another concern is the A/M warranty may not approve OEM remans and may even supply the parts so if that's the case
your out of pocket a lot more
