05 f250 with the 6.0. New injectors, new fuel pump, new alternator, new starter. Just replaced the ficm the other day. Just recently the truck wouldn't start when headed to work. Starter engaged no problem, engine wouldn't crank. Took a few times a it fianly cranked and turned over. Then driving the truck just shut off. All gauges worked, radio, ac blew. Just lost all power to the engine. No smoke, no sputtering, truck ran perfect. Once I stopped, same start issues. Been doing this for a few days now. I've been checking connections, everything looks fine, but I've been listening and now when it dosnt turn over I don't hear the buzzing. I hear the fuel pump but no buzzing. I turn the key over a few times until I hear the buzzing and it starts right up. But still the issue of turning off while driving. Seems to be an electrical short somewhere. Just seeing if I can get any ideas to see if I can narrow it down before I start digging into it. Thanks for looking and your comments ahead of time.
Yea that was gonna be my first suggestion but I saw that they just put a new alternator on, I've heard of some going out really quickly as well so how new is the alternator?
I got the replacement part from oriellys. Under watanty so I went ahead and got a new one last night. Put it in this morning. Now there is no buzz from the injectors.
The power supply. Checked the icp sensor, clean as a whistle. Unplugged to see if it would start with it hooked up. Still cranks but dosnt turn over. Something is not allowing the injectors to buzz. Not allowing the engine to turn over. Went through the fuses, checked all wiring and harnesses, connections. Cleaned the IAT sensor. I guess whats next is to check the IPR, just a lack of motivation
Did you ever happen to get a FICM voltage before your start it, just turning the key on, cranking, and finally while running? Will take two people to do but it's probably a bad FICM like you were saying before honestly anything under 47 I believe isn't good and could cause injectors to not do their job properly
I just replaced it this morning with a brand new power supply. It was under warranty so why not. Had it scanned, only thing that it showed was mass air flow, the IAT sensor which I cleaned, it was really dirty which explains my rough starts lack of power and poor MPGs, and 2 glow plugs. Theres a gremlin hiding somewhere. Probably best to take it in and have it completely looked through
Yea sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and bring it it, maybe a more advanced scanner can find something but if not I wish you the best in sure they will figure it out but let us know
Im sure it will be a couple days before I have an answer. Thinking I'm gonna gave to invest in the DASHBOSS, so I can diagnose these things on my own. Heard alot of good things about em. But it looks like things are leading to the IPR. Which isvwhy I had some sort of on depand diagnostics so I can point the finger at that. Sure would save me some money but I'm like everyone else and don't have much time to invest in being a stay at home mechanic, which dosent sound like a bad deal. Ill be sure to fallow up with the outcome. Thanks for your help.
Yea of course and I hear you I just kind of depend on buddies to have scanners or I can normally find a hook up cause just for the diesel shop by me to buzz test and run info on my truck is $118 and I'm nowhere near made of money just for that haha
So the mechanic told me that the ficm should buzz the injectors even if something else isn't working but I have no buzz. I just replaced the powersource. Is it possible that the ficm is just completely shot? No buzzing, no turn over.
Definitely possible, look up how to bolt test a FICM and that will show you how if you don't know and if you find anything less than 47 at any point it's either out or going out
I am going to go out on a limb and say ficm harness...
and NEVER buy super duty parts from orealies ...ask me how i came to this conclusion
a ficm power supply they can probably get right but i would bet it is a dorman or equivalent.
at least you didnt make the mistake i did of buying an hpop because they had it in stock
i have learned SO much since then
Okay just volt tested the ficm. 48 key forward, stays at 48 while cranking. But still no injector clatter.
