I have read through some of the stickys and other threads on a 6.0 no start issues and I need some fella's to point me in the right direction on what I should check first. First the motor is a fairly new reman from Ford Powerstroke Remanufactured and has only been in my truck running for about 3 months now. Prior to the motor being installed it got all the updated standpipes, dummy plugs, and the STC fittings and turbo oil pipes were already the newer design, not the older ones that had a tendency to fail. Injectors were tested and passed and had all new o-rings installed prior to being put in the motor as well. Truck has ran absolutely great... until yesterday. Started the morning off getting fuel. Later that morning I hooked up my trailer and loaded my Kubota BX to do a small favor for a friend. Did the job and reloaded and brought truck home and parked it in my driveway. I let the truck sit from 1:30pm until about 7pm when I finally unloaded the tractor and went to fire up the truck to park the trailer when she wouldn't start. It cranks over fine, no issues there. Turns over flying but will not fire. The batteries are only 4 months old (replaced with new ones for the reman motor install) and the tester says they are fine.
- No CEL
-I cycled the key several times with no luck before attempting to start
-Truck has had 0 issues to date with new reman and no hints of any other problems
-Oil level is fine, coolant level is fine, no visible signs of anything amiss.
What would you guys check first? I guess from easy to hard??? Please help.
The only monitor I have is SCT Livewire but the truck is still running on stock files. No hot tunes yet. I hear the fuel pump but I will crawl under and have a bud turn the key on to make sure. Be back in a few minutes.
Alright fuel pump is working. Took the upper fuel filter out to see if it was filling with key on and it filled right up. Fuel looked good as well. Fuel filters were just replaced about 3 weeks ago also.
Great. Can you report some numbers? Specifically...
FICM V and batt V while glow plugs are heating.
FICM V , batt V, IPR %, ICP psi, and ICP V while cranking.
You also might want to check out DieselTech Ron's Youtube vids on 6.0 no starts. They are good and good for you!
Edited to add...
Dang it. I type too slow. ...or too much.
I'm trying to read up now on how to check those... I was really hoping it was something simple like a possible blown fuse or relay since I was towing with my trailer yesterday. Basically just trying to rule out something that's easy and just plain stupid. If it was a HPO leak I would think I would have had some kinda clue or trouble before she just died like that... then again maybe not.
I don't necessarily think that it is an HPOP system leak. It's more likely a failed ICP sensor or a FICM power board issue. You could pull the panel on the FICM and check the voltage with a meter. ...but using your monitor will probably be faster if that is the problem and will definitely be faster if it isn't.
If you haul, you should be monitoring anyway. So, this won't be lost time.
I'm going to order the Scangague 2 from BPD this week, also going to get the updated billet fuel filter cap so I have a test port to monitor fuel pressure. I know how important it is to monitor these trucks but there is only so much I can do at one time... I make good money but I'm not rich lol. Thanks for your input boss.
Update: Truck is running, purring like a kitten. All I did was pull out the 302 and the 304 relays and checked those as suggested by the sticky then I wiggled some of the wirelooms around. Put everything back in and she fired right up. So now I just got to narrow down if it was a relay or a possible wireloom issue. Being that the truck was recently worked on I'm going to say wireloom but I will replace both relays just to make sure. Thanks guys.
My point wasn't that you didn't know the importance of monitoring. ...just that any time spent getting your monitoring going is time well spent. The Scangauge is a good device.
Well I just took her out for a 10 min test drive after letting her sit and idle up to operating temp. Now she is showing a P2614 code. Do you by chance know what that is?
Alright fellas my baby is down again. I replaced the 304 relay and truck ran for almost a week straight with no issues then on Saturday afternoon I went to start it (cold start) and she wouldn't fire again. Same symptoms as before. Motor turns over flying but won't fire. I do have some more info now thanks to my new Scangauge 2 but the numbers all seem good to me.
FICM sync no with key on, yes after running.
FICM logic board 12v constant
FICM output key on, cranking, and running all hovered around 48v. It would flutter to 47.5 to 48.5v but that's it.
IPR was 14.8% at key on not running, at idle it was 24.6%, 45% to 50% at normal acceleration, and 70% to 75% at a hard acceleration from a stop but would come back down to 50% or so as the truck moves up through the gears.
ICP 580 psi at idle, 800+ at 60 mph.
All these numbers look good to me so I have no idea what else it could be unless its a wiring issue? Is there anything else I can look at before I throw in the towel and take it to the Stealership?
I should add that I went out to the truck this morning after getting the Scangauge PID's all set and she fired right up. At this point I'm at a loss as to what it could be...
Shot in the dark here, but before you give up try putting a 6.4 starter in it. I had one that would intermittently not Sync. There are 2 syncs by the way. Sync and FICM sync. Ficm sync is camshaft. Sync is crankshaft. 6.0's like fast RPM's when cranking.
Obviously it runs fine right? Just has a hard time starting. 6.4 starter would be what I'd try.
Edit: you stated FICM would sync AFTER running. On a no start what does it do?
check the IPR sensor on the valve cover. make sure there's no oil on the connector. Or when it does not start un plug that sensor and see if you have any luck.
Next time it doesn't start I will check the FICM Sync. My understanding is its supposed to sync during cranking correct? I looked over the entire top half of the motor, no oil anywhere to be seen and none on any wiring harness or sensors that I can see clearly. When the truck does start she purrs like a kitten. I have verified that its getting fuel, she fills up the bowl in about 6 seconds or so with no air bubbles and the filters were changed about a month or so ago but I never had starting issues until about a week ago or so FWIW.
I assume you have already pulled/checked/cleaned the plugs on the FICM and PCM...
I had a similar issue years ago and was chasing things down like crazy. I fnally ended up replacing the FICM wiring harness and haven't hand the issue since. Just throwing an idea out.
I've been looking things over like crazy. I will double check the FICM wiring harness to make sure its not chaffed or lose in anyway. Its been raining here all day off and on. Supposed to be nicer out tomorrow so I'll probably get to it in the morning. Thanks for all the help with ideas so far fellas.
