Custom Homelink Install!

Not one to go the "normal" sun-visor route, I decided it might be cool to have a garage door Homelink unit mounted in the overhead sunroof switch console. I think it turned out pretty good.

1) Split apart the Homelink (HL) module and mount it:

2) Drill the plunger holes and countersunk mounting screw holes:

3) Radius the cover plate sides w/Dremel tool and small grinder wheel - went through 2 of these. It was cold out..:

4) Dremel out the underside of the cover so the plunger rubber sits BELOW the cover:

5) Added the inside of nylon push-rivets to make up for the overhead panel thickness:

6) Where to tap in for power (green) and ground (black):

7) HL module zip-tied back together:

8) Wire plug can not be plugged back into the console bracket. Velcro-ed to the HL module:

9) Finished....

10) ...and re-mounted....

pics are not showing, or at least not for me.
My browser is Google Chrome and can be a royal pain.

No, just got to know what code you "need" from flicker. They've screwed it all up. Pic's are showing now.

Thanks man. The curved panel where it mounted proved to be a bit more of a challenge than I had planned. But you know the saying...once you drill that first hole, it HAS to work!!

You did it right. Not many people would have thought of adding homelink. If I used my garage door openers, I would do that mod in a second. I may still do it. Where did you get all the stuff?

Got the Homelink's off of e-bay. Around $30 shipped. There's a non-rolling code version (older cars & half the price) and a rolling code. Most newer garage doors will use a rolling code module. The non-rolling modules are good if you need an extra cover. Got the tap-its from Lowe's, originally, and that was it.

I also happen to have a tan overhead console (both pieces) as a back up if you decide to do it. Just PM me and let me know as it's on the shelf in the shop. SURE glad I didn't need it!!

The nylon push rivets, I have some more around here if you need them. Just drilled each pusher button with a 1/16" bit taped so not to go through the front and added a drop of glue to each. Then pushed them in. The push buttons don't make contact without them.
