Bully Dog Pup recalibrates your tranny?
I have read on this site that no programmer except SCT programs your tranny, BUT i was reading in the manual that my Bully Dog Pup came with it states the following.
For your transmission to work properly with the downloader it must be recalibrated. WARNING: You must complete this entire procedure or you may encounter problems with the transmission. By recalibrating the transmission through the following procedure you allow it to learn how the downloader delivers power. 1. Find a long straight road with very little traffic. 2. Come to a complete stop and put the downloader on its highest setting. 3. Moderatley accelerate to 55 mph. 4. Allow the vehicle to shift into overdrive and while in overdrive maintain a speed of 55 mph for 15 seconds 5. Then lightly apply the brake just enough to enguage the brake lights, hold brake lights on while maintaining 55 mph for another 15 seconds 6. Then come to a complete stop for 20 seconds 7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 five additional times 8. Then drive normally and enjoy your Bully Dog PowerPup downloader. I know very little when it comes to programmers, does this redo the tranny similiar to what SCT does? What is the Bully dog programmer doing when they have you do this? |

The transmission on your truck has an adaptive shift strategy. I think they are having it adapt to the new power setting. It isn't really "tuning".

Thanks for the info

It may raise line pressures for the tranny, but it doesn't tune like an SCT. My buddies 04 was completely undrivable with the triple downloader on highest settings because the transmission was HATING it.

the Bully Dog has no tuning for the trans. All it does is raise the line pressure depending on the setting you select(which helps ANY trans). basically what they're having you do is drive the truck with the higher horsepower without beating on it. if you're not going to switch your tunes every day and you let the transmission learn the higher horsepower before hammering down, then you shouldnt have any problems.
i personally just like the SCT as it has an actual TUNE so the trans can handle the extra power as soon as its loaded. the main reason i think people have failures with the BD is they change the tunes on the fly then go ripping on the truck, if you let the truck learn all the extra power and let the trans adapt to handle it, you shouldn't have any problems at all. i had the bullydog tripple dog before the SCT and honestly i liked the BD. Once you drove for a hundred miles or so without beating on it, the truck shifted pretty good on the extreme power setting. and once you put the pedal to the floor it shifted real good through the gears at WOT. However the power and strict trans tuning on the SCT is just that much better. Last edited by FastFocus; 12-22-2008 at 09:32 AM. |
