its not an easy job either way you do it , it is easier with the down tube out , the bolts at the top need to come ose and the two bolts at the manifold , which are no fun because they are usually rusted to hell, the clamp at the egr cooler and the pipe comes out , put your block off in and reasemble , the hard part is geting the bolts out , i usually cut them with a cut off whel and get new instead of fight them

Forgive my simple mind but why not just unplug the EGR? That is what I did to mine weeks ago when I was belching black smoke and horrendous performance - since then - no more black smoke, no more belching and puking, no more hesitation and no codes to boot.

Stupid Question??

Is that what the EGR delete is good for?? I have never had my truck once dump black smoke like most of the guys here?? is that normal?? hesitation is null and runs awesome??

I have a '03 - she was puking, hesitating, belching black smoke - horrible - I unplugged the EGR and all my problems went away. I researched it on here and seemed the right thing to do. All problems went away.

I would be sitting at a light, hit the go pedal and steady puking black smoke - felt like she was choking and dying, would barely move! Terrible when it starts happening right in the middle of an intersection! Could barely get it out of the way of oncoming traffic. Scared me a few times - thought for sure I would be toast.

Unplugged that EGR and WOW - no more problems. Hmmm, imagine that. No longer pumping black exhaust back through my engine as fresh air (go figure) and my engine is happier and runs better. Hmmph.

It would seem if your not having issues then you probably would not need to do it. Personally I dont understand why even have an EGR - I hear it helps heat up the engine during winter - but other then that - I could care less to pump exhaust back into my engine! I tried to pull out my EGR but found the process to be a bear and i eventually gave up & taped her up (duct tape to the rescue) for a later endeavor when I have more patience and time to try again. I was having symptoms - if your not - well, do it if you want a good fight - getting that bugger out of there, could save you problems down the road - seems everyone eventually does have a problem with their EGR - but hey - if yours is fine - save the cash for later.
