Tire size?

I have a 2003 F250 4X4 and need to replace my tires. Stock is 265/75/16 and I would like to go to 285/75/16. The tire dealer is telling me I cant go to 285's because the rim is only 7" and needs to be at least 7.5". The rims are also stock. Can anyone verify if this is true or not?

Thanks, Bubbalarge

It's not "optimal" or it may be a small bit out of what their book deems as "acceptible" but a 285 will work just fine on a 7" wide wheel. 8 would be best, 7.5 is ok, and 7 will work. If anything, it may crown just a bit (middle of tread is taller than the sides) but it won't be a safety hazard if that's what you're asking. I was in the tire industry for a few years and we put 285s on a lot of stock wheels.
