I believe 11/32s is the size you need, which is just over 5/16s.

So I bought a 1/2 inch tap. I put a 1/2 nut on the end of the thermo coupler and it fit snuggly.

Is this correct before i start drilling??

you might want to triple check before you drill...1/8" NPT is very common for thermocouples..i don't know what you have though...

do the threads on the TC match? both fine or course? usually they're fine threads..an 1/8" NPT tap is larger than an 1/8 of an inch..
