Yes this is normal. This is why you hear of 3-5 shift flare.... Shifting pattern is 1 2 3 5 then lock the torque converter

Actually it depends on the tune. A tune with early lockup with shift as follows: 1 2 3 5 lock 6. And a normal tune (or stock) will shift like: 1 2 3 5 6 lock. Only in extreme cold weather conditions does a 5R110 use an alternate 4th gear but then doesn't use 5th... Here is a link to a great article on the 5R110

I thought there was only 5 forward gears.... 1 2 3 (cold 4) 5.... I though the other "shifts" were just the torque converter locking.....

Did you read the article?? 6th Gear is overdrive. There are 2 shift sequences the torqueshift can go through, each one has a 5 gear sequence. So the transmission is technically a 5 speed, but with 6 gears. For the Livewire TS the computer just thinks 6th gear is 5th because it never shifted into 4th so there were only 4 gear changes. 1-2, 2-3, 3-5, 5-6.

haha hey now....

I never have really understood the inside of automatic transmissions. I will leave it to someone who knows what they are doing to work on the inside of one. There are just way to many ways to mess it up and way too many little pieces.

But believe me, I'm always up for trying to learn something new

When it can't find 5th gear because its smoked it'll also use 4rth as a default. Ask how I know. Lol. Tried explaining this to my tuner who then told me I was nuts and there is no 4th gear. I won't open that can of worms again, but yes 12356 then lock of the torque converter is 'normal operation' in stock tuning.

A guy named mark k (kavlowski or something) over on powerstroke nation used to be a trans engineer for ford, helped design the 5r110. Very smart guy, and he has posted a lot about it over there.
