But he is actually using coolant.

I just want to keep an eye on this since my wifes truck has the exact same issue. I went to the dealer today and got a gallon of antifreeze so I can refill it in the morning.

Listen to Jon. There is basically a little vertical radiator inside the egr cooler and the coolant leaks from there then the hot exhaust evaporates it and bam...white "smoke". Just to give you a better idea.

What's weird though is I fill it up midway, then it'll only go down to the fill line. I've never seen it below this?

hose water is fine as long as it wasn't much. Should be 50-50 +/- 10%. Mind you it'd be better if it was distilled water. I read it should never go above 60% pure coolant.

if this truck is an 04 , there is a good chance that the orange hose from the egr cooler to the oil cooler could be leaking causing a slight coolant loss, but it burns off before it drips , if this has been going on for a bit i would think the egr cooler would have taken a dump by now, if you get on top of the engine and look down in the valley of the engine , look and see if that connectore hose is orange or blue , if its orange thats the odl style and are bad to leak and cause the symptom you are having

I have blue hoses and I looked this morning and the level seems to be where I put it last night. I'll drive it around for a bit and see what happens...

Quick question did you go to Sanders Ford? I've had nothing but bad luck there with my PSD.

Well yes there was a TSB for getting a new "sticker" for the degas bottle, which moved the min/max lines on the thing. The new max line is pretty much at the old min line. I got concerned when I noticed this on my truck and was told this from the dealership.
