Towing with Big Sticks

Not much info out on the forums with any details. 190/50s and stage 1 turbo.

I towed my boat about 240 miles yesterday at 60 mph and part way into the pull I decided to change tunes to see if I could improve fuel economy. So about every 50-60 miles this is what I saw. I didn't have a tow tune available, but it was interesting to see what the results were with what I had available. The transmission shift points were fine, except the T/C locking in 6th was a bit too low on the Extreme for some of the hills. Smoke was pretty much non-existent.

The boat and trailer are about 6,000 lbs (23' wakeboat).

Aggressive Street (worst economy. However, this tune has the best economy running empty.)

Mild Street (about 2-3 mpg better than worst)

Stock (warmest temps. About same fuel consumption as Mild)

TDP Extreme (Great EGT and power. Economy slightly lower than Stock)

Good to know man! Are you running a MTW stage 1 and who did you get the 190's from. I tow a lot and want to add some larger injectors probably 190's. I was thinking 35-50% nozzles. I like to see what a tow tune does for ya.

Stage 1 Turbo made by me (MBM). Probably identical to the early MTW S1.
190/50s open port, MBM. The result of my tread on making larger injectors.
As far as fuelling goes, just the blue spring for now (I was pretty stable at 60 psi prior to the new spring). Pressure hasn't dropped below 42 psi at max fuel and shorter WOT runs (who really knows what it is at #7 & #8). In any reasonable driving it never goes below 70 psi. I am still toying with the idea of a regulated return, but I don't need it for the <0.1% of the time it would be useful. Now if it becomes a track truck or a dyno queen, then it would be on the "to do" list.

I read the first few days of it but haven't checked back on it in a while.

Do you plan to step up the weight that your towing? I haul around 10k, 2-4 days a week. And I think I'm gonna try 190/30's, but a little scared to with towing all the time. Might go with 175's. I have a back up 6.0L if there to much, I don't know which direction to go. Guess I'll just keep reading. Lol

I don't plan on pulling anything heavier in a while. However, with tuning for the larger nozzles, there is no reason to be concerned. I just tried out and IDP tow tune for my injectors last night and it ran even cooler than what I posted above. Also, the examples above were tunes for stock sticks, so even with slight over-fuelling (read performance) and a stage 1 turbo it works just fine. The only time it could be a factor was if the PW of the tune was too large for the turbo or if you worked the truck too hard and over-heated the engine.

Over the weekend I towed 4 horses and gear (about 10k) for about 3 hours. It was flat with very little wind and a mid 80s temp. I used IDP's tow tune. I'll let you guess which one was loaded. My true delta is 2* less, the EOT over-reads by 2*, not that it really matters much. Fuel economy loaded was 16 mpg, better than expected.

Was that IDP Towing file adjusted for your 190s, if so do you know how much fueling was pulled?

Yes, he had the parameters. However, I don't know what the adjustment was from his other performance tunes. I do know that the PW is fairly typical of most stock stick tow tunes at highway speed under some load. The PW doesn't go up much higher under full acceleration, but the ICP goes to 4,100 psi. So that is where the adjustment must be.
