Newby with SCT Tuner question

I have a company vehicle with the 6.0L, 2004 F350Dually, all the goodies. Anyway, the previous user of the vehicle purchased a SCT Tuner and had a few tunes for it. I really can't get any info from him, this was years ago. He claimed after the tune he got better fuel mileage and i remember this truck pulling a 10,000# trailer on the highway and it getting 15 mpg easy. Now it's lucky to get 12 with no load. A bit more info, he left the company and very soon after the engine needed to be replaced ($7600 for used engine), now the engine runs great, starts great and all that but mileage is terrible (relative i know) Ok, so on to the tuner. He said it was returned to stock because he had injector issues and thought that was the culprit. Am I safe to plug in the tuner and see if it is in fact stock and/or if i can have a better mileage tune running? I have no idea on this thing. I've had the truck for about a year, but it would be nice to get better than 12-13 mpg all day, highway/city same mileage.

Thanks
Dan

Yeah, plug it in and see if its unlocked. I'm assuming the motor was replaced by the dealer which means they probably flashed the computer changing the strategy code. This is only a concern for you if the SCT tuner has custom tunes on it. If they are custom, you will need to get new tunes made for the new strategy code that's on the truck now.

You will know if it has custom tunes because when you go to program the vehicle, the tuner will give you the option of using pre-programmed tunes or custom tunes. But unless you can verify the strategy code on the truck and the custom tunes, I would not use them. Different strategy codes will cause problems with the truck.

THanks

I guess I will hook it up and see how it goes and come back on here with results.
